Recent Cases

On Tuesday, June 23, 2009, the skeletal remains of Travis Lee Baker, who had been missing for over two years, were unearthed on land off Eulalia Lane.

Investigators received new information in the case that successfully furthered the investigation.  Investigators were eventually able to collect enough evidence to acquire a search warrant for property off Eulalia lane, where Baker’s remains were eventually located.  A warrant for the murder of Travis Lee Baker was issued for the arrest of John Lee Mitchell, who had moved to Florida a few months after Baker’s disappearance.

On Wednesday, June 25, 2009, John Lee Mitchell was arrested near Winter Garden, Florida, by Florida Department of Law Enforcement agents assigned to the U. S. Marshal’s Task Force and officers assigned to the fugitive unit of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. Mitchell was brought back to Catawba County, where he awaits trial.

The community continued to provide information essential to the case, and investigators followed numerous tips and leads over the two years. It was through phone information that the case was solved. Cases such as these can often only be solved through the help of the community. Law enforcement cannot do the job alone.
